In 1993, Mercedes-Benz chose to locate a manufacturing facility in Alabama.

That announcement completely changed the face of economic development in the state. People throughout the world started saying “What’s going on in Alabama?” and inquiring about what the state had to offer new and expanding businesses.


Q. What factors have led to your state’s dramatic growth?

Following the Mercedes win, Alabama began an aggressive economic development marketing campaign for the state. Corporate giants such as Honda, Boeing, Hyundai, EADS North America and most recently, ThyssenKrupp, have moved the state up in the rank and led to the announcement of tens of thousands of jobs. For the past four years, Alabama has been named the best state for its economic development efforts in the Southeast by Southern Business and Development magazine. ADO has also been named by Site Selection magazine as the top state economic development agency in the country.
